Case of Sciatica

I am 48 years old and suffering from sciatica pain in my left leg. I have been on the brufen off and on. I keep visiting the doctor when the pain is severe. Do you have anything in homeopathy which can give permanent relief?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the lumber spinal cord in the low back extends through the buttock area to send nerve endings down the lower limb. Sciatica is the pain which starts in the back and then shoots down the legs. An abnormal pressure on the part of the sciatic nerve may cause the trouble in the back and the limbs. It can also cause tingling or pins and needles in the leg. It can also become very sensitive, where even a light touch is painful. You may even feel a weakening of the buttock and calf muscles. Coughing, sneezing or straining can make it worse.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve or portion of it is being compressed in some fashion. It is caused by a slipped or ruptured disc that gives the pressure on the sciatic nerve or by spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal that leaves inadequate room for the nerves. Spinal stenosis most commonly affects people older that 50.

Treatment for sciatica depends on the underlying cause and the severity. If you have minor episode of shooting pain, you probably do not need medical attention. It takes care of itself in a week or 10 days, and then no further treatment is necessary. If the pain persists and pain becomes unbearable, then it makes sense to see an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation. In the small percentages of cases where physical defects are found such as slipped disc or ruptured disc or spinal stenosis.

In most cases, there is no miracle cure. You may have to change the life-style like sitting less at one place for a long time and do some regular exercises. Changing bed, desk height, chair etc. can help. Yoga, stretching exercises and swimming are best things recommended.

Homeopathic medicines are very safe and have no side effects at all. It can give good result and can help you reduce the intake of the painkillers. Some homeopathic medicines which can help reduce pain are: Colocynth, Causticum, Rhus tox
